MSNBC, "49 die in Indonesia plane crash; Passengers trapped inside aircraft at Yogyakarta airport" |
A commercial jetliner carrying 140 people caught fire as it landed at an airport on Indonesia's Java island on Wednesday, a Garuda airline official and witnesses said. At least 49 people were killed, a government official said. “We found 48 dead bodies at the spot. One person died at Sardjito hospital,” provincial secretary Bambang Susanto told Reuters, referring to the city’s main medical center. Other reports, however, put the confirmed death toll at 21.
The Boeing 737-400 was carrying an undetermined number of Australian journalists and diplomatic staff who were traveling in connection with a visit to Indonesia by Australia's foreign affairs minister, said Scott Bolitho, a spokesman for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer has been in the Indonesian capital for several days, where he attended a regional conference on counterterrorism. Australian Prime Minister John Howard said about 10 Australians were aboard the plane, but he could not confirm any Australian deaths. Asked if Australians had died, Howard said, “we should be prepared for bad news in relation to at least some of the Australians on board the aircraft.” |
