Global Aviation News Article |
| October 4, 2006 |
The New York Times, "Equipment
on Plane in Brazil Collision May Have Been Faulty" |
Brazilian Air Force investigators confirmed
Wednesday that the Boeing 737 involved in an apparent midair collision
last Friday was visible on radar until the time of the accident. They
declined to say whether the other plane, an Embraer executive jet, was
also visible, an indication that equipment on the smaller plane to make
it visible to the airliner may not have been working.
The airliner, operated
by Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, crashed
in the jungle, killing all 155 aboard. The Brazilian-made Embraer Legacy,
being delivered from the factory to a charter company in New York,
made an emergency landing.
If the equipment on the
Embraer was not running, that might explain why there was no warning to the airliner,
but it would not have affected the ability of anticollision equipment on board
the business jet to detect the Boeing and warn its crew. The pilots
of the business jet, United States citizens still in Brazil for questioning,
testified after the crash that the equipment functioned throughout
the flight and that there was no warning of a pending collision, said
Anderson Garcia, a police investigator.
