New York Times, "At Least 122 Dead in Russian Plane Crash"

          Flight 778 touched down smoothly on a rain-slicked airport in Siberia on Sunday morning after an overnight flight from Moscow. Then, one young passenger recalled, something went seriously wrong. "After we had begun to stop," the passenger, Margarita Svetlova, 15, said in a television interview, "we began to pick up speed again."
          The airplane, a 19-year-old Airbus A-310 with 204 people aboard, careered off the runway in Irkutsk, a regional capital close to Lake Baikal, one of Russia's most famous natural landmarks and a destination for many of the passengers. It struck a concrete wall and slammed into a row of low-slung storage buildings, where it broke into pieces and began to burn.
          By Sunday night, the confirmed death toll stood at 122. A majority of the victims were passengers unable to escape the flames that engulfed the plane and burned for more than two hours. Fifty-eight people were in hospitals across Irkutsk, many of them gravely injured. Twelve others are unaccounted for and are presumed dead.
