TACA Airlines Runway Accident at Toncontin International Airport, Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Summary of the Accident
At least five people were killed and 65 were injured on May 30, 2008 when an Airbus A-320 carrying 124 passengers and several crew members owned by Central America's TACA skidded off the runway and crashed down a 20-meter (66-foot) embankment as it tried to land at Toncontin International Airport, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The TACA plane was flying a Los Angeles to San Salvador to Tegucigalpa route when it may have overshot the runway during landing. The plane broke into three pieces and many onboard suffered smoke inhalation from a fire that ignited during the crash.
Among the plane crash victims were persons from the United States, Honduras, Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
According to the Honduras Industry and Commerce Minister Norman Garcia said poor visibility could have contributed to the crash. The airport at Tegucigalpa, Honduras is ringed by mountains and considered one of the most dangerous in Central America, according to aviation experts.
