Atlasjet Crash in Keciborlu, Turkey

Summary of Accident
On Friday, November 30, 2007, a McDonnell Douglas-83 passenger plane operated by Atlasjet crashed into the mountains of western Turkey, killing all 57 people on board. The plane took off in Istanbul and was nearing the the airport in Isparta when it lost communication with the control tower and crashed seven miles away from the airport, near the town of Keciborlu.
The plane carried seven crew members and 50 passengers, including several prominent nuclear scientists on their way to a physics conference. The pilot last communicated with the airport controllers at 1:36 a.m., telling the controller's that the runway was in sight. The Turkish plane then slipped off the radar. The plane's wings and engine became detached during the crash and landed atop a 6,000 foot peak and the main body of the plane was found 500 feet lower. The cause of the crash is currently unknown, as the weather was good and the crash site was not along the plane's planned route. Turkish authorities are still investigating this tragedy.
